Survey Reveals Contractors Have it Better

SJD Accountancy, the UK’s largest accountant company for contractors, has released a new survey revealing a unique insight into the contracting market.

The award winning company, which is the chosen accountancy firm for more than 11,000 clients, questioned over 1,000 contractors in order to gain their perspective on the freelancing industry as a whole.

The main findings taken from the survey revealed that contractors across the country have a high level of enthusiasm when it comes to the contracting community. Over half (57%) of those surveyed found that contracting has improved their work/life balance and a massive 77 per cent of respondents find that being self-employed is more satisfying than being a permanent employee.

The SJD survey also found that when asked their feelings concerning the current state of the contracting market, almost two thirds of respondents scored 4 or above on a scale of 1 to 6, with 6 being the most optimistic.

Over 80 per cent of the contractors surveyed said that they are earning more than they were as a permanent employee, in fact over one third of respondents are making more than £500 a day, with almost another third earning between £400 and £500 a day.

Two thirds of those surveyed said they have seen rates increase, or at least remain the same.

Simon Dolan Managing Director for SJD accountancy, said of the findings, “We were delighted to find that so many of our clients took the time to complete the survey, and we have been pleased to be able to pass the findings back to them, to help them feel more a part of the contractor community in which they work.

“The statistics we have gathered clearly show that the contracting industry is still doing well and that this way of life offers huge benefits for people who choose to step away from full time employment – preferring a more flexible and rewarding way of life instead.”

According to the SJD report, it seems that contractors are in fact better off; not only do they benefit more financially, but they also have increased freedom and flexibility that permanent workers can only dream of.

Other reasons behind enjoying the life of a contractor included more variety of work, a better work/life balance, not having to be a part of office politics, being viewed as an industry expert and contractor expenses.
