Shorter .uk domain names launched by Nominet

Nominet has just approved plans to offer registrations directly before the ‘dot’ in .uk.

From summer 2014, shorter, simpler ‘example.uk’ domain names will be available for the first time alongside ‘example.co.uk’, ‘example.org.uk’ and so on. This represents the biggest modification of the .uk namespace since it began.

Any unique ‘example.uk’ domain name (e.g. one that does not have an equivalent name already registered as a .co.uk or a .org.uk) will be available on a first-come, first served basis from launch.

Over ten million existing .uk customers will be offered the shorter equivalent of their current address, with five years to decide whether they want to use it in addition to, or instead of the domain they already have. In the small proportion of instances where there could be competition – e.g. where one person holds example.co.uk and another holds example.org.uk – the shorter domain will be offered to the .co.uk registrant.

The five-year free reservation period is designed to help businesses taking up the new domain do so at a time that coincides with when they next change signage or stationary, so they don’t incur unnecessary incremental costs.

The wholesale price for the new domains will be £3.50 per year for single year registrations and £2.50 per year for multi-year registrations. This is the same price as a current co.uk domain, ensuring the cost of a domain name will remain a very small proportion (around 1.5% for a small business) of the cost of being online.

All Nominet’s existing domains (.co.uk, .org.uk, .net.uk, .me.uk, .plc.uk, .ltd.uk and sch.uk) will continue to run as normal.

The move brings the UK in line with other large country-code registries, like Germany’s .de or France’s .fr. A recent Nominet survey of UK business decision makers found that 72% thought direct ‘example.uk’ registrations should be an option, while only 2% thought they shouldn’t.

“The .uk namespace is one of the most popular and trusted available and we’re committed to ensuring it stays up-to-date and relevant,” Nominet CEO Lesley Cowley said. “We’re excited to offer the option of a shorter, snappier domain name that we believe will appeal to both our existing customers and the businesses and bloggers of tomorrow.”

Nominet is planning a major programme of communication and outreach with its customers to ensure people are aware of the changes, and intends to announce a definitive launch date by February 2014.

The news is part of a broader programme of work announced by Nominet today. The company is committed to driving innovation, enhancing security and improving standards in the .uk namespace, in the face of a rapidly changing internet landscape.

The international domain name market is set to become more liberalised and competitive, with over 1,000 new suffixes becoming available in the next year.

Nominet Bidding to run ‘dot Wales’ and ‘dot Cymru’

Nominet is taking forward the application for a Top Level Domain (TLD) for Wales. The application will be made to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the body responsible for evaluating the applications a wide range of communities, cities and brands who want their own domains on the internet to join the likes of .com and .co.uk.

Based on survey results and stakeholder dialogue, Nominet is applying for two TLDs – dot CYMRU and dot WALES. This will deliver domains that are inclusive of the whole community, bringing economic and cultural benefits and encouraging greater use of the Welsh language online.

It will provide consumers and businesses with an opportunity to express their identity and pride through a dedicated online space.”

Nominet will make a formal bid to ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) for both dot WALES and dot CYMRU to be established. Nominet will work with the Welsh Government and consider the needs of Welsh businesses and consumers, and the range of geographical, cultural and linguistic communities who wish to have a stake in the project.

Uk Registry Continues to Grow Strongly

Nominet will today release figures showing that .uk registrations grew by 10.5% over the past 12 months, bringing the total number of domains to 9.7 million by the end of September 2011. .uk also maintains its position as the world’s second largest country code registry after Germany’s .de. The figures are published in the latest edition of Nominet’s annual study of the domain name industry, which is formally launched at a conference of Internet professionals in London today.

The Domain Business report shows that preference for .uk remains strong with eighty one percent of those surveyed saying they prefer .uk sites when presented with a choice of a .uk or .com in search results. The main reasons given were that it would be more likely to be a UK based company and have more relevance with prices in sterling and acceptable delivery charges.

The report also shows that the global market for domain names is healthy and growing with an increase of 9.5% this year, taking the total number of domains globally to 218 million, an increase of 19 million. Generic Top Level Domains now make up 60% of the market while 39% are country code Top Level Domains.

Commenting on the report, Lesley Cowley OBE, Chief Executive of Nominet, said: “Nominet is proud to continue to operate one of the world’s largest Internet domain name registries and the good news is that the .uk space continues to go from strength to strength. The register was at 9.7 million domains at the end of September 2011 and we expect it to reach 10 million in the early months of next year. 2011 Nominet Internet Awards – open for nominations

Nominet, the UK Registry,  is looking for companies and individuals from all over the UK who are doing amazing things with the Internet to enter the 2011 Nominet Internet Awards.

The awards recognise people or organisations that are making a real difference to their communities or society as a whole through the web.

As examples of best practice, winners of the awards can expect to gain international exposure to parliamentarians, academics and the wider Internet community. The awards are run in partnership with Nominet Trust, which invests in initiatives that contribute to a safe and accessible Internet used to improve lives and communities. Last year, three of the finalists went on to receive funding from Nominet Trust.

Entries close in two weeks time – Thursday 28th April – with all submissions to be reviewed by an independent panel of judges chaired by the Rt Hon Alun Michael MP. The award categories this year are:

Nominet calling for more stakeholder engagement

Nominet, the not-for-profit organisation responsible for .uk Internet infrastructure, today announces an update from its policy team, including a call for contributions to current policy proposals.

Nominet is taking a more consultative approach to policy development, and has published more details of its new process framework at www.nominet.org.uk/policy

The policy process is designed to ensure participation from the broadest group of stakeholders possible. It can involve the development of an ‘issue group’ to discuss issues relating to .uk policy, which encourages participation from relevant stakeholders around the UK. These groups will discuss specific issues and provide policy recommendations to Nominet’s Board for consideration. This ensures that Nominet hears the considered opinion of relevant stakeholders prior to making any policy decisions.

The policy process is managed by the Nominet Secretariat and all interested parties can sign up for updates at www.nominet.org.uk/policy/signup

In addition, Nominet today announces updates on two current issues.

Criminal Activity involving use of domains

The Dealing with domain names used in connection with criminal activity issue group is being formed, in response to a proposal submitted by Serious and Organised Crime Agency (SOCA). The publication of this proposal led to a wide range of stakeholders expressing an interest in being involved in the discussion. Nominet is calling for those wanting to put themselves forward to take part directly to register by 23rd February.

It is anticipated that the group will be selected by 2nd March, and will meet for the first time later that month. An independent summary of the issue has been commissioned and will be circulated to stakeholders and issue group members in advance of first meeting of the issue group.

Expired Domain Tasting

Expired Domain Tasting is a proposal for an issue group.

The policy process was started with a proposal submitted by a Nominet member regarding the monetisation or traffic monitoring on expired domains by registrars.

Nominet is calling for stakeholders to comment on the proposal, or the treatment of expired domains more generally, by 2nd March. A decision as to whether this issue proposal will progress to the constitution of an issue group will be based on the feedback received. Nominet launches knowthenet.org.uk to support online users

Nominet UK has launched a new website to support consumers and businesses online, knowthenet.org.uk.

As the Internet plays an increasingly huge role in everyday life, consumers and businesses are increasingly looking for help and advice on a range of online issues.

• Research conducted amongst UK consumers revealed that the top Internet related concerns were online banking, safe and legal downloading, security and ensuring content is appropriate for young children.

• In September this year, there were 31,000 Google searches for ’Internet safety’, 60,500 searches for ‘cyber bullying’ and 34,000 searches for ‘computer virus’.

• Security risks are also growing, with almost 80,000 people falling victim to Internet fraud in the first nine months of 2010 – a 10 per cent jump on last year.*

Knowthenet.org.uk aims to help Internet users get the most out of the Internet. The site provides advice, information and video content for consumers and business users across three broad categories of Internet activity:

• Getting started online – including introductions to blogging, social networks, online banking etc
• Staying safe online –a library of material on a range of topics from password choice and phishing scams to privacy settings on social networks
• Doing business online – explaining key issues businesses need to understand when doing business online, from SEO to intellectual property

“Information is only a click away on the Internet. The challenge is that often people don’t always know what to trust, or where to go. Free, impartial advice is hard to come by. We’ve launched the knowthenet site to bridge this knowledge gap, addressing concerns and offering impartial, useful advice which gives people the confidence and know-how to do more online,” explains Phil Kingsland, Marketing & Communications Director at Nominet.

Nominet is supporting knowthenet.org.uk as part of its commitment to making the Internet a more trusted space for all. “We see knowthenet playing an important part in our commitment to making the Internet a more trusted space for everyone who uses it – it’s vital for the wider digital economy” explains Lesley Cowley, Chief Executive of Nominet.

The site aims to provide a starting point for people to gather information on how to get more out of the Internet, pointing users to other trusted Internet resources such as GetSafeOnline and Identitytheft.org.uk for more detailed information.

The front page of the website will be updated several times a week with short posts that will provide practical advice for consumers and businesses as media stories break and major new online developments occur, from security scares to new Internet trends, explaining the implications in straightforward terms and giving practical advice to readers.

Knowthenet.org.uk users can also follow site updates via Twitter, comment on stories and suggest additional topics.

95% support for Nominet’s recommendations on future governance

Nominet’s consulation on shaping the future of .uk domains closed on 15 December 2009.  Nominet have published the survey responses here.

So far there as been overwhelming support to the recommendations made by Nominet, with 95% of respondents of approximately 300 respondents in favour of Nominet’s proposals on each of the four consultation questions.

Nominet instructed to take down 1200 .co.uk domains by the Met Police

This week Nominet received an instruction from the Metropolitan Police’s Central e-Crime Unit (PCeU) to take down around 1200 .co.uk domain names. These domain names have been under investigation for criminal activity.

As part of Operation Papworth, the PCeU have targeted web sites run by organised criminal networks that purported to sell designer items – clothes, jewellery and electronic goods.  Many of the sites involved supplied counterfeit goods or in some cases simply failed to supply any goods to the consumers who placed orders.  Nominet worked with the police and our registrars to quickly carry out the instruction to shut down access to these sites.

The scam websites were offering high demand, high value items such asUgg Australia Boots, ghd hair straighteners, and jewellery from Tiffany & Co and Links of London. Innocent shoppers were duped into making what appeared to be bargain purchases, but received either nothing at all or counterfeit products.

Let’s hope this quick action has not harmed the reputation of the UK domain registry or indeed the growth in online shopping.

British consumers prefer .uk domain names to .com

According to Nominet’s annual domain name industry report, 77% of British consumers prefer to use a .uk (.co.uk or .org.uk) rather than a .com when searching for information on the Internet. Consumers stated they would most likely click on .uk rather than a .com reinforcing that .uk is a relevant and trusted environment that presents the most appropriate and local information.

Nominet’s report also stated that despite the current economic climate the global domain name industry has seen an 8% growth with 187.6 million domain names registered worldwide. Generic top level domains (gTLDs), such as .org and .com, have grown on average by 6% whilst the country code Top Level Domains (ccTLDs) including .uk and .de (the German registry) fared slightly better and together generated a 10% average growth in registrations.

This strong growth is enabling country code domains to close the gap between the more well-established Top Level Domains (TLDs) and proving that the world’s connected consumers are becoming more familiar and trusting of localised domain names. Furthermore, they are increasingly expecting businesses to be represented by a site with a domain name that is appropriate for the region in which they are operating.

Phil Kingsland, Director of Marketing and Communications at Nominet, comments: “The findings show that businesses must now pay attention to Internet brand awareness and marketing strategies that are in line with consumer expectations. It is a global marketplace, but what we are seeing is that consumers trust and rely on a more local touch point with a brand.”
